A hostile race from the Dark Nova Roleplaying Game.
A while back
did some B&W illustrations of various bad guys for us for Fortune and Glory
, the next expansion for the Dark Nova RPG. Due to a change in printing where we are shifting from B&W to two levels of colour (low-resolution and high-rez), I figured I would colourize them. Here's the Byntai.
Description from the DNRPG-
No race known to mankind or her allies is more despised and hated than the Byntai. Every nation in the known universe, with the singular exception of the Khurian Empire, has bounties or a state of all-out war declared against the Byntai. Cold, arrogant, and cunning, the Byntai believe they are the superior race in the universe, and everyone else is fit only to serve them as slaves. After millennia of cultural indoctrination, any sense of empathy or compassion for other races has been thoroughly erased, making the Byntai- from children to soldiers and elites- uncaring arrogant bastards. The Byntai once had a massive star-spanning empire even larger than the Naradi Empire, until they attempted to overrun Capellan space nearly a thousand years ago. Most of the Byntai territory was annexed by the Capellans, and what little remained was absorbed by the Garoudan and Serog over the intervening centuries. To avoid total annihilation, the Byntai took their five remaining worlds and hid them using an advanced dimensional rifting technology. This allows them to move their planets through a dimensional rift into a parallel universe for a period of time. Such rifting is fine for smaller objects such as ships and personnel, but entire planets and their gravity wells create instabilities in the D-rifting procedure. This creates an entropic cascade effect where the very substance of the world begins to degenerate if kept out of its home dimension for more than a few years. Thus, the Byntai rotate these homeworlds in and out of “D-prime”, or the home universe.
Most of what is known about the Byntai comes from captured archives taken from their vessels and facilities. At some point in their history they began to follow the same line of genetic engineering as much of humanity, and then pushed far beyond common-sense boundaries in an attempt to make themselves superior. The Byntai overdid it. They altered their bodies until they could no longer survive in a raw environment; their immune systems destroyed, and their biological tolerance weakened severely. The remaining positive results of this genetic engineering are evident in the Byntai's superior strength, height (average height is 6'8"), and ability to see in the dark like a cat. They rely on environmentally sealed armor to walk around outside of their ships or buildings, and only on their homeworlds, with their conditioned atmosphere, can they walk under open skies for any length of time.
Byntai have no central government, per se, but each of the surviving worlds is ruled by one of five major megacorporations, which govern their commerce and military. Byntai are slavers, raiding other races for slave stock. They prefer species that are either perfectly suited for their assigned tasks, or that are aesthetically pleasing. Byntai love three species above all: Humans, Garoudan, and Kyaren. Humans are the most powerful militarily of the "slave" races, and capturing humans is a challenge akin to hunting a lion cub in the midst of a pride of lions. Likewise, human slaves sell well on the Khurian market, creating a market-driven demand. Garoudan they hunt for gladiatorial slaves, for they do so love to see the lupine aliens tear their enemies apart. Kyaren are prized for two reasons: their incredible beauty, and their incredible rarity. Capturing a Kyaren means tangling with the Ahrugan military- the one thing that scares the Byntai to death- and as such means VERY few are ever captured. At current, every Kyaren captured by the Byntai has been recovered through brutal raids by the ATC military, and there is now a bounty equivalent to forty million credits put out by the Byntai for the capture of a Kyaren.
Byntai military tactics are best described as hit, grab, and run like hell. They never occupy a target world for more than two to three hours; preferring instead to load their transports to the gills and haul butt out of the system before any military response can show up. If pressed, their slave fleets will dimensionally rift to escape. This is one of the reasons they hate and fear the Ahruga (that, and the fact that they have soundly lost every engagement with the ATC): the ATC has dimensional rifting capability as well.
