Dark Nova: Faolchu Powered Armour by Breandan-OCiarrai Dark Nova: Faolchu Powered Armour by Breandan-OCiarrai
EDIT: IMPORTANT NOTICE!
We originally purchased this as part of a block of pre-existing art by other designers, and did not design this or a couple of the other designs going into Fortune and Glory. This was done because :iconjepray: - as may of you know- suffered a severe head injury in January, coded twice (i.e., died) in the ER and on the operating table, and is still in hospice recovery unable to do most of the work he used to. He has managed to draw a handful of pieces since he's been in rehab, but cannot keep up with the backlog of art we have to put in to meet our deadline in three weeks. This was one of those designs. So, for those who have been pointing to the original design on :iconmestophales: gallery or elsewhere and claiming we are "ripping it off", be aware that 1) we are using it with his full permission, blessing and giving credit for the design, 2) it was never claimed that it was an original design of ours, and 3) for those who point to similarities between this and the Elite armour from Halo, there's a reason- the original artist who designed this went on to work for Bungie. 'nuff said.

Now, originally I was going to drop this from the game because of all of the complaining, but at :iconmestophales: 's urging I am reconsidering. I would still like to hear from my watchers out there, however.

Well, long story short- bought the image through a stock image company for use in the game, modded it out from 3D to 2D to fit the manual better, only to find out that the stock image company had NOT secured the permission of the original artist. So, contacted him, he was cool with our using it, pissed at the company for ripping him off, and things moved on from there until the similarities were pointed out between the armour an some form of Elite armour from Halo. Not identical, mind you, but close enough to be problematic. So, scrapped plans for using it, ponied up even more money and commissioned artwork to OUR specs as opposed to using someone's second-handers.

The artist linked above in the description is the one who built the original model, but he's been selling the 3D model for quite some time. That being said, this wasn't one of our designs, it was one we paid for because our vehicle/armour artist is still recovering from a head injury that killed him, twice, and has left him in rehab. With the issues that keep cropping up, however, we're dropping this from the game and replacing it with our own design.

Normally I only wirte something when I like it, but this is one extrem example of difergence between Functional discription and unfunctional designe.

I´m workingas private projekt on the development of exoskeletonsystems and the concept of making such a system useable by all the races in your are RPG, just by shifting control points is just, hm not possible.
You may be abel to adjust a suit to a wearers sature with sliding systemes, smart material and so on,but one Problem in your discription is the whole anatomic joint configuration and "biotechnological/mechanic" rules.
While a complete human maschine interface based on a nerological linking, and storing the pilot in a Fetus position, in the chest would ignore this problem.
Following your discription this thing is a negative feedback system, that would be worn.
So hahuman scale Human, Kyrean ect. Weare woul jus have the cois of getting his legs brogen or his arms.
The ratio between the joint of a body cant be altert without altering a suit of armors configuration of joint an thier scale, thus would make the production of such a suit much more expansive then a less universal one. You need outside modular systems that would make it expansive again.

Sorry for the hart words, but this is no good armor designe just a nice picture.
Good designe always follws the function, if this isn´t given the designe becomes bad.

If I understand you correctly, the issue is with the shape of the joints, particularly the inverse knees. I can see where you're coming from, but the pilot sits higher up in the unit. If you note by the size comparison of the Human, if they were in the suit, their feet would come to rest just above the knees. This would lock their legs in a stiff-legged position, to be sure, but would not bend them unnaturally backwards. Likewise, the arms adjust up or down according to species, and in the case of much smaller species such as the Namaran or Sleeth, their arms would be entirely in the torso. Primary control of the suit- as with most vehicles and vessels in Dark Nova- is via neural control with some physical control as secondary. However, there are manual back-ups in the event of a neural link failure- not unheard of with the use of some ENWO systems- and thus LPAs, at least, are designed for the wearer to manually move them.

It's also important to note that I didn't design the suit, :iconmestophales: did, we just purchased the design to use in the game and rendered it into a two-dimensional version that you see here. That being said, I templated a transparent human form over it to verify where the body parts would wind up sitting, and they do fit in the suit without the joints being an issue. Only the Garoudan- much larger than Humans- would wear it in a full-fitting capacity, and even then their hands would not be fully within the gauntlets.

Yoe say control points simply adjust by sliding up or down inside the legs, that indicates a negative motion feedback through pressure or motion capture points.
Regarding your own words their legs would lock in a stiff-legged position, so the knee joints could not operate the lower legs naturally. And regarding the Arms.
I see what you mean.
They fit in but the shoulder wide would be beyond normal ranges of an average human sized creature. So there would be still some problems regarding the degree of freedom needed for a negative motion feedback or free movement without braking the limbs.
For exaple the lower arm must be place inside the upper arm of the armor, because of the shoulderwide the ellbow will be roughtly in the shoulder joint. When not lowering the shoulders of the armor the pilot will be in a very streched position with his shoulder joints in its maxmimum pitch along the Transversalaxis.
So If you write that there are control points, the suit still would have a lot of drawbacks or non functional parts of its design (design of its technical conception and functional basis, not artistic).
The suit is still too small to allow a complete enclosing of a least ~1,5m high Namaran. Their upper volume of possible arm movements would need, two interlinking spheres of a least more than 1,2m. so if the torso is not at least more than ~0,8m deep and ~1,8m wiede the will hit the inside of the suite.
At least I must admit there are ways to make this thing work, but they are really complex an thus making the suit inpractical and would consume a lot of effort, wich a race spezific designe would not need, thus beeing much cheaper.
I do not criticice the pruchased picture, but your self made discription of how this thing works.

This is an image of how one stands in the suit from a guy who made real-life Halo Elite armour, which is nearly identical in design. As you can see here, the real-life suit fits an average sized Human once the arms are lowered a bit. The control points referenced are the manual back-ups, not primary control points, and use an intuitive micro-AI-driven reaction system that is to negative-feedback systems we are designing today what the Aurora hypersonic jet is to the Wright Brother's plane. Like I said, I understand where you're coming from since you're comparing it to the work you do, but A) the technology is vastly different, B) I am trying to wrap a description we had already developed around an image it wasn't intended for, and C) it's a game, not a DARPA primer on combat exoskeletons like the ones we've been testing at Fort Benning, some suspension of disbelief is expected :-)

In loose body shape, I can see that. Here's the Garoudan for comparison, so you can see the body build is similar, even though they are wildly different species.
