Well, a year older and rather contemplative. I blame the Nyquil, which is a necessity courtesy of the latest plague the kids brought home. As some of you know, I often speak on panels about how we as science fiction authors create the universes we craft our stories in. One of the more common questions I get during the Q&A process is how I develop the culture, psychology, paradigms, etc. of the various alien races out there. My answer is always the same- I simply look around me. Compassion and brutality, war and caring, love and hatred, and so many other conflicting ends of various emotional spectra are not purely human experiences. Look at how other primates will take in pets and care for them, how chimpanzee tribes and dolphin pods will war with one another over territory, how various animals show grief at the loss of loved ones and joy upon seeing others. All of this shows me that the universe was built with certain universal concepts that will be expressed- to varying degrees, of course- in almost every sentient or semi-sentient species out there. Those that fall outside of these concepts will be the true aliens, so strange as to be unfathomable. Most races we will encounter as we set foot into the starry seas above will be similar enough to us to be recognizable, and in that we will hopefully find unity enough to continue the fine human tradition of creating communities.
  • Mood: Lazy
  • Listening to: Dresden Files audiobook marathon, again :D
  • Reading: Nada, ran out of books :-(
  • Watching: grass grow
  • Playing: The Secret World
  • Eating: yogurt-covered banana chips. Weird, but good
  • Drinking: Caffeine, oh blessed brain-juice

Breandán Ó Ciarraí
Artist | Professional | Literature
United States
Author, Bladesmith, Game Designer, Tactical Medic, Father

Me in a nutshell-
My Art: I originally started a DA account to showcase my bladesmithing work, but it has since expanded to include literary and game art works as well. I don’t consider myself much of an artist, per se, mainly because I couldn’t draw people to save my life. I am the author of the Dark Nova novels, an ongoing series set in the 24th century, and the writer for Dark Nova Games.

Me: I'm 41, a Sinsearaí, and probably one of the more eccentric people I know due to the odd mix of careers, hobbies, and interests. I am what is colloquially called a "closet geek", with an inner geek installed next to my emotionally scarred Valium-popping inner child :D . I'm married to a lovely young woman, :iconkat-childs: , and together we have two daughters capable of more property damage than the Yellowstone Caldera if it exploded. I live in Texas, but grew up in Southeast Alaska. Making it weirder, my family is originally from Cill Airne, Ireland.

Day Job: I am semi-retired, but when not-so-semi I work for various PMCs as a Force Protection/PSD medic. Despite how high-speed it may sound, it basically means I am a glorified, seriously overpaid (not complaining) babysitter who patches up the boo-boos of other operators. Meh, a job's a job. I am focusing on my side-jobs as an author and writer/developer for Dark Nova Games in the hopes that I can make it my primary career. My kids need a daddy more than a heroic memory, and I've been beat to hell in my career, so its time to move out of the field and settle down to be a father.

Hobbies: gaming (MMOs and FPS video games and some P & P, mostly AD&D [1st and 2nd ed.], Shadowrun, and a few of our own we cooked up), renaissance festivals, blacksmithing (the reason for this gallery initially), writing sci-fi (novels and an RPG based on them, also the feature of this gallery) and modern Dresden-ish occult novels, building model castles and the like (my secret geeky obsession), and so on. I also do geopolitical analysis and such, but that's related to work, not fun, so it doesn't count as a hobby I guess.

Anything else you wish to know will require generous libations of cheesecake and eggnog as the sugar rush I had when starting this is wearing off...

Current Residence: Texas
deviantWEAR sizing preference: um... naked?
Favourite genre of music: I listen to everything from Rob Zombie to Tartanic, too eclectic for a favorite :-)
Favourite photographer: Die, paparazzi!
Favourite style of art: realistic fantasy and sci-fi
Operating System: Apparently, GLaDOS (Windows 7, trying it's damnedest to protect me from myself...)
MP3 player of choice: one that works
Shell of choice: turtle :P
Wallpaper of choice: I prefer hardwood panelling
Skin of choice: um... living skin?
Favourite cartoon character: Gir
Personal Quote: "Quando podeces te regi eorum fecerunt?"- used when dealing with idiots
